Syllabus
Instructor: Professor Matt Kreckie Email: [email protected] Office Hours: By Appointment Only Course: Intro to Media Productions: CM-102-F Location: Martire Building Room W122 Time: Wednesday 11AM - 1:45AM
Course Description CM102: Foundations of Multimedia Production is an introduction to digital communication technologies.
Course Objectives CM102 is an immersive and challenging course designed to improve students' critical thinking and media technology production skills. Our objective for this class is not only to make you a better user and consumer of communication technologies, but also to allow you to explore what it means to be a critical thinker in an increasingly technology-driven consumer society.
Attendance and Tardiness Regular attendance is mandatory, and it is crucial that you are here for the beginning of each class. If you are late three times it counts as one absence. Not being in class will negatively affect your participation grade. After two absences, 10 points will be deducted from your final grade for each additional absence. On the 4th unexcused absence the student will automatically receive a failing grade. If you miss class it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and to keep up with the work.
Laptops You are required to bring your laptops to each class. While you are in class, laptops may be used only for class-related purposes. This means no emailing and instant messaging friends, no checking scores, and no doing work for classes other than CM102. If you use your laptop to “leave” the room during a class session in any way other than designated by an in-class assignment, you may be given an absence for the class.
Assignments Grades will be based on several production projects, in-class participation, completion of in-class assignments and the creation of an on-line portfolio.
Grading Rubric A- Student understands the needs that direct the assignment and delivers a flawless product without delay or ahead of schedule. The overall quality of the work is excellent in planning, execution and delivery. Professional Quality B- The student has delivered a competent product that has a few minor flaws or areas that could use improvement. The student completes the work according to the parameters of the assignment and generally understands the work flow and expectations of the client/project. Above Average Quality C- Work is submitted that fulfills the letter of the assignment without necessarily expanding upon the spirit of the project. Project has many areas that need improvement including a better understanding of the expectations of this type of production and improved workflow or technique. Average Quality. D- This level of grade is reserved for projects that are received late, contain serious errors or omissions or are generally just above the threshold of minimal acceptability. Below Average Quality. F- Project has not been delivered or is seriously flawed. Project may lack attention to details, has many careless errors or omissions and is generally unacceptable to instructor or client.
Extra Credit: Students will have the opportunity to resubmit work that they feel that they feel that they could have done a better job with. For work completed in the first half of the semester they have until midterms to resubmit the work and let me know that the assignment has been reworked. The final, quizzes, and midterm assignment may not be resubmitted, these grades stand.
Disability Services: Sacred Heart University provides equal educational opportunities for all students regardless of disability status. A warning about plagiarism, cheating and the University's Academic Honesty Policy: Plagiarism is the act of using another person’s ideas or expressions in your writing without acknowledging the source. The most blatant form of plagiarism is to repeat as your own someone else’s sentences, more or less verbatim. Other forms of plagiarism include repeating someone else’s particularly apt phrase without appropriate acknowledgment, paraphrasing another person’s argument as your own, and presenting another’s line of thinking as though it were your own. You may certainly use other persons’ words and thoughts in your research paper, but you must acknowledge the authors. Plagiarism often carries severe penalties, ranging from failure in a course to expulsion from school. (From Joseph Gibaldi and Walter S. Achtert, MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers ([New York: MLS, 1988] 21-23.) Please review the University’s new policies on academic integrity available on Blackboard. The penalty in this class for academic dishonesty is failure for the course.
